Scribbled Lives Week 24—Jazz
George Gershwin’s quote provided the perfect opportunity to get jazzy with sumi marks à la Denise Lach—my first attempt at her technique. Once the sumi lettering was laid down, I walked away and let it dry overnight. Built-up caps were added using a fineliner.
The piece was intended to be square, but it’s not. I thought about making it more colourful by painting the counters. Add a red dot? Hmmm… I think it’s done!
However, the next day, it stilled begged for that elusive something. Maybe depth? Pencil shading was added to make the black sumi pop.

Sumi ink, automatic pen, Pigma micron, pencil on Saunders Waterford. 24 x 21 cm. Detail.
