Jungle is Full of Diamonds

For my final assignment in Yves Leterme’s Built Up Capitals class, I laid out an Arthur Miller quote in graphite using a fine lead pencil and building up letters stroke by stroke. The goal was to draw letters that related to their adjacent neighbours, including the ones upstairs and downstairs, with no glaring gaps. The class exercises helped developed hand-eye coordination and attention to subtle line quality.

The artwork may not have the wow factor that knocks your socks off, but it represents hours of hard work and attention to detail!

I’m satisfied. This course took me on a long journey beginning with the straight-laced Trajans where my capitals resided for decades. This six-week course helped wash the starch out of my Romans! It was a confidence builder—a good place to launch further practice.
