Scribbled Lives Week 34—Recipe

While researching the word ‘recipe’, I became intrigued by its connection to the ‘℞’ prescription symbol.

Using a technique learned in a workshop taught by Massimo Polello, the letter ‘R’ was drawn with a flat brush to create the background. Actually, I have 4 Arches Text Wove size sheets of R’s! I was planning to use my handwriting—which is as illegible as my doctor’s—to describe the origin of the ‘℞’ symbol, but that didn’t create enough textural contrast. Instead, I used a type font designed by Heather Martinez.

Graphic elements were added in watercolour and pencil.
