Busy Solitude

Scribbled Lives Week 15—Solitude Quote

This most unusual year found many of us Scribbled Lives members grateful to have a creative space in which to get lost. It was an opportunity to experiment, learn, and grow. This quote by Voltaire seemed a perfect expression for time spent in the studio.

Pencil. Paper. Solitude. Keeping it simple this week.

Over the past year, I’ve been focussing on built-up capitals in an attempt to wash the starch out of my Romans. After playing with monoline “type” in recent prompts, I was inspired to build up lowercase letters to see if I could make them dance.

The happiest of all lives is a busy solitude. Voltaire

I normally work small, but decided to go a little larger for a change of pace; letters are 2 to 2.5 cm (3/4 to 1”) tall. Mechanical pencils 0.3 and 0.5 mm on Fabriano 90# HP.
