Remembrance Day

Scribbled Lives Week 44—Lest We Forget

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ended. At 0500 hours that morning, Germany, bereft of human power and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. Armistice Day/Remembrance Day/Veteran’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on those who lost their lives during the conflict. I chose an excerpt from the poem “For the Fallen” by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

"They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them." Robert L. Binyon

One of my first watercolour practice sheets came to light last week. It wasn’t particularly spectacular, but neither was it a failure, so it went into a holding drawer. However, it seemed the perfect background for the Robert Binyon text. Watercolour and built-up capitals using graphite on Arches 90# HP.
