Scribbled Lives Week 23—Astronomy
The Perseid meteor showers that peak in August usually have me heading to a rural field to count the “shooting stars”.
Last week I was waiting for materials to arrive so I could finish sewing a pen roll to house pointed pens. I composed a haiku and intended to present it as the second part of Week 22’s Combining Art Forms. However, the dark fabric was the perfect background for a quote about astronomy—serendipity!
Chisel brush lettering on cotton using Pébéo Setacolor paints which are made especially for fabric items that can be laundered later. The opaque colours are left to air dry and then heat set. Each letter was drawn with a 1/4″ brush using white and then retouched with silver for a hint of shimmer. Fabric paint is viscous, so the challenge was to mix for easy flow and coverage.

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.” Augustine (Og) Mandino

The patterned fabric is reminiscent of a Japanese print; the pen roll ties closed with an obi sash.
This was the first of the Kangaroo Pocket Rolls I’ve designed. There are still several patterns available for sale.
