Orange

Scribbled Lives Week 19—Orange

Ah, a chance to use the colour orange, present a quote about orange, or discuss anything orange.

My initial thought was to combine a number of techniques: play with recently-arrived tools from John Neal—Tim’s radius pen, Cora pen, and the Handwritmic pen designed by Brody Neuenschwander—pens with names! And learn how to make letters following Folded Pen Adventures by Carol DuBosch.

But first I needed a topic to ground this whirlwind of activity!

Childhood memories of oranges! Mom sliced them into wedges for us to enjoy as “orange smiles”. Dad scored the peel using his pocket knife before skinning and segmenting. Very “dad” and juicy fun to share! When reaching for chopsticks in the utensils drawer, we might have found dried rinds—ready to flavour a soup. Fun memories!

Oranges are categorized as sweet or bitter. Included are 14 varieties you may have enjoyed fresh, preserved, or as a flavouring.

These are experiments in gestural italics and folded pen lettering using watercolour and ink. Clockwise from top left: Martin Jackson 6 mm, Brause 1.5 mm, Cora pen, Speedball C-3, and Tim’s radius pen (small).

This is an experiment with the Handwritmic, a tool that looks similar to a ruling writer and designed by Brody Neuenschwander. I got some spatter and will play more to develop chatter… maybe by using textured paper… or infusing more gusto when touching pen to paper!
