Scribbled Lives Week 46—Movie One Liners

“Toto…we are not in Kansas anymore.”

This week’s topic was to showcase a one liner from a favourite movie. Who could forget Dorothy’s comment to her dog Toto in The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 classic film.

This month, in Brody Neuenschwander’s workshop series on wrong letters, we are layering text and colour. By layering, we are moving further away from legibility and focusing more on the composition as a painting. Here’s layer 1.

"Toto...we are not in Kansas anymore."

Handwritmic, pointed pen and brush using watercolour graphite and watercolour on Fabriano 90# CP.

While Brody shows how to layer four texts, my capability is two—for now! The following image shows the addition of layer 2. Again, It’s a line from The Wizard of Oz: “There’s no place like home”.

"There's no place like home."

I can’t say this effort is a success, but it’s certainly an interesting concept. I think more experimentation is needed to determine graphic principles for this technique that complement one another, such as line spacing and colour palette. I would also investigate materials, including a heavier weight watercolour paper.

The final wrong letters class in December focuses on the Handwritmic and a homemade pen fashioned from plastic pipe and a louse comb!
