Scribbled Lives Week 38—Map It Out
This week, SL members set about making maps: some photographed their studios, others illustrated their space, while others designed mental maps and abstract spaces to highlight their areas of interest.
The Map
Since map drawing is new to me, I sought direction from Map Art Lab, a book by Jill K. Berry and Linden McNeilly. After sketching different ideas, a small-town theme emerged. The different work zones in my studio are characterized as storefronts in a community. Drawing this map gave me insight into the work that cartographers do; I’ll never look at another map in the same way!
It was amusing to dream up the buildings. I ran out of space to accommodate the areas of our laundry room where studio activity spills over. How I wanted to include the Wet Media Wetlands, the Sink Holes, and the Inky Dinky Laundromat! Originally, my plan was to present a black and white map, but it really called for colour. At the last minute, I decided to…paint the town!

Curious about the Artist’s Shrine—like, what is it? Several years ago, a master’s student interviewed me for a paper about the correlation between creativity and the space where it’s practiced. She dropped by the studio to snap photos, taking particular interest in a collection of mementos that inspired me. In her report, the display was labelled “Artist’s Shrine”. In the realm of social science culture, such a thing has a name!

The Book
After taking a class with bookbinder Stephanie Wolff to learn a layered accordion structure—a type of star book—the studio map called to be deconstructed and reconfigured as elements in an accordion book!
