Artist’s Journey

An Artist’s Journey: the First 40 Years

My story introduces the events and people who have shaped me as an artist. In this PowerPoint presentation, I talk about my growth as a calligrapher, share lessons from stumbling blocks I’ve tripped over, and discuss tips for staying motivated.

I enrolled in my first calligraphy class in 1981. Italic. I packed one pen and one bottle of ink. That led to another class, another hand, more supplies, local guilds, international conferences, and connections with a worldwide community of letter lovers. More than 40 years later, I reflect on my journey.

What reviewers are saying.

I’ve been making marks and letters on various surfaces for years. I had an early start when my parents gave in to my habit of drawing on the walls of our house!

Based in Toronto, Canada, I’m a lettering artist—passionate about Roman letterforms. I find ways to make marks that stretch their identity as traditional characters. I experiment with tools and materials to expand the boundaries of calligraphy. That motivates me to find words that echo deeply and call for expression by combining the message with the materials to augment meaning.

Whether you’re a novice calligrapher, an old lettering hand, or your mojo has stalled, I feel certain something in my story will resonate with you…and shed light for the journey ahead.

Every artist travels their own path. I encourage you to stay motivated in your practice and to follow your compass on the journey as a learner and lover of letters.

Lean in. I look forward to sharing my story and insights with you. Contact me to discuss a date.
